The Treasure Box by Margaret Wild, illustrated by Freya Blackwood is an excellent book to start a discussion about war, displacement and the importance of a peoples’ culture. Deliberately vague as to time and place, the story unfolds as Peter and his father flee a bombed city, carrying the sole surviving book from the library. It is a treasured work about their people. Ultimately the book must be left behind but when Peter grows up he is able to restore it to its rightful place. This is a very touching book about some hard topics.
