The Winter Bird

by Kate Banks, illustrated by Suzie Mason, is a sweet book celebrating the beauty of winter and the resourcefulness of the animals who tough out its cold days. As the weather gets colder and the days shorter, a nightingale with a broken wing, a “spring bird”, worries about what will happen when winter comes. “You will learn,” says a kind barn owl, while a rabbit shares his cozy den with the bird and a squirrel shares his store of nuts and seeds. In turn, the nightingale sings beautiful songs about far-off spring and the stunning glitter of the sun on snow. By pulling together and helping each other, the animals ease the season’s hardships and share in their joys. And then, it’s spring again!
