This Close to Happy

This Close to Happy by Daphne Merkin is a brave book about her lifelong battle with depression. No punches are pulled in her descriptions of what it is like to live with a debilitating illness that can prevent you from engaging in life. The nature vs. nurture argument is examined closely. She had an extremely difficult childhood with a “Mommy Dearest” mother and a witch of a nanny. It’s nothing short of amazing she survived. This is not easy reading but very helpful in understanding what it is like to live when you’re not always sure you want to. (Non-Fiction)
