Wilde Lake by Laura Lippman is her 20th novel. Events over many decades in the suburb of Columbia MD bedevil Louisa Brant, the newly elected District Attorney. She is faced with prosecuting a brutal murder that starts connecting to events in her family’s past life. There is lots of tension, twists and good writing to enliven a two generation mystery plot line. Smart dialogue and subtle observations of law enforcement and family quirks enhance the story. The conclusion is great. The exploration of growing up in the 1970’s and 80’s, the heavy weight of sadness from repeated loss of loved ones, and observations on the changing roles of women are the heart of this novel.
