You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi is a novel about the complexities of finding love after loss. Feyi Adekola has just started returning to normal life as a successful artist in Brooklyn and is attempting to date again, five years after the death of her husband in a car crash that she survived but which left her scarred, both physically and emotionally. She begins a warily platonic relationship with attractive, well-connected Nasir, who is smitten with Feyi and organizes a show for her work at a gallery on a Caribbean island. But, when she arrives, Feyi finds herself increasingly drawn to celebrity chef Alim Blake – who also happens to be Nasir’s father. Feyi and Alim bond over their individual losses and feel a connection in the fact that their lives are still shaped by grief. Emezi’s novel is a moving exploration of serious subjects, but it’s also an immersive romance with a complicated love triangle.
