New York Times Bestselling Author of Ordinary Grace: Author Talk with William Kent Krueger

You are in for a riveting hour online with New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger! Join us as he discusses his newest book in the Cork O’Connor series Fox Creek and his other works!

Fox Creek follows Cork O”Connor in a race against time to save his wife, a mysterious stranger, and an Ojibwe healer from bloodthirsty mercenaries. The ancient Ojibwe healer Henry Meloux has had a vision of his death. As he walks the Northwoods in solitude, he tries to prepare himself peacefully for the end of his long life. But peace is destined to elude him as hunters fill the woods seeking a woman named Dolores Morriseau, a stranger who had come to the healer for shelter and the gift of his wisdom. Meloux guides this stranger and his great niece, Cork O’Connor’s wife, to safety deep into the Boundary Waters, his home for more than a century. Meanwhile, in Aurora, Cork works feverishly to identify the hunters and the reason for their relentless pursuit, but he has little to go on. He knows only too well that with each passing hour time is running out. But his fiercest enemy in this deadly game of cat and mouse may well be his own deep self-doubt about his ability to save those he loves.

Author Talk with Kate Beaton: Bestselling Cartoonist of Hark! A Vagrant!

Join us for an enlightening hour online with highly-acclaimed Kate Beaton, the New York Times bestselling author of Hark! A Vagrant! And Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands.

Before there was Kate Beaton, New York Times bestselling cartoonist of Hark! A Vagrant! fame, there was Katie Beaton of the Cape Breton Beatons, specifically Mabou, a tight-knit seaside community where the lobster is as abundant as beaches, fiddles, and Gaelic folk songs. Her first full-length graphic narrative follows Beaton after university as she heads out west to take advantage of Alberta’s oil rush, part of the long tradition of East Coasters who seek gainful employment elsewhere when they can’t find it in the homeland they love so much. With the singular goal of paying off her student loans, what the journey will actually cost Beaton will be far more than she anticipates.

Arriving in Fort McMurray, Beaton finds work in the lucrative camps owned and operated by the world’s largest oil companies. Being one of the few women among thousands of men, the culture shock is palpable. It does not hit home until she moves to a spartan, isolated worksite for higher pay. She encounters the harsh reality of life in the oil sands where trauma is an everyday occurrence yet never discussed. Her wounds may never heal.

Beaton’s natural cartooning prowess is on full display as she draws colossal machinery and mammoth vehicles set against a sublime Albertan backdrop of wildlife, Northern Lights, and Rocky Mountains. Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands is more than a memoir, it’s also an untold story of Canada: a country that prides itself on its egalitarian ethos and natural beauty while simultaneously exploiting both the riches of its land and the humanity of its people.

The collections of her landmark strip Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside, Pops each spent several months on the New York Times graphic novel bestseller list, as well as appearing on best of the year lists from TimeThe Washington PostVultureNPR Books, and winning the Eisner, Ignatz, Harvey, and Doug Wright Awards. She has also published the picture books King Baby and The Princess and the Pony. Beaton lives in Cape Breton with her family.

Shakespeare on the Sound Presents: As You Like It

“Do you not know I am a woman? When I think I must speak.”

Fun Fact: In Shakespeare’s romantic comedy As You Like It, the heroine Rosalind has more lines than any other female character in all of Shakespeare: more lines than Cleopatra or Juliet, more than twice as many lines as Lady Macbeth.

In As You Like It, Shakespeare’s version of Into The Woods, we have not two, not three, but four romantically challenged couples wandering the forest of Arden. Without Rosalind, they would never find each other, much less true love. Shakespeare wrote As You Like It at the peak of his career, right before Twelfth Night and Hamlet, and it has been an audience favorite ever since.

Shakespeare on the Sound Education Director and Macbeth/Christmas Carol actor Nick Urda and board member/Shakespeare teacher John Love will guide you through As You Like It and, in an interactive presentation, hope to show you why they consider Rosalind Shakespeare’s greatest heroine and As You Like It his most interesting comedy. Their program comes to Rowayton just in time for As You Like It, Shakespeare on the Sound’s 27th annual summer production, in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park from June 14th through July 2nd.

Author Talk with Kate Zernike

While working for The Boston Globe in 1999, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kate Zernike broke the story that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology had admitted to decades of discrimination against women within the institution, prompting a degree of soul-searching among higher education and a concerted effort on the part of scientific establishments to prioritize women. Now, Zernike has expanded this deeply impactful, still-relevant story into her latest book, The Exceptions: Nancy Hopkins, MIT, and the Fight for Women in Science. The book centers on Hopkins, who, in the 1970s, led sixteen other women on the MIT faculty to catalogue and expose the lack of equality and sexist treatment they had experienced in their careers. The book paints a picture of the feminist movement at a moment when it seemed like misogyny in the professional world was a thing of the past, only for women, particularly those who were highly qualified, to discover that their accomplishments were still being underpaid, undervalued, and discredited. The Exceptions tells an important story of women who advocated for themselves and fought back against systemic injustice.

Join us as we welcome Kate back to the Rowayton Library for a presentation of her newly released work. There is no fee to attend, but we ask you to register here. Refreshments will also be served and books will available for purchase, from our friends at Barrett Bookstore, and signing the night of!

Children’s Book Club with Tammy Malkin

Wednesdays from February 1 through February 22

On her 11th birthday, Kate receives an unusual present from her rich Uncle Herbert: a train! No, not a toy train or a train set, but a real-life, full-size working train called the Silver Arrow. As Kate and her brother, Tom, begin to explore her gift, the train steams to life and soon stops to pick up a wild band of ticket-holding animals. The two children are quickly faced with the challenge of catering to their animal passengers and figuring out just how this mysterious locomotive works. In some ways, the Silver Arrow is every child’s dream come true: there are cars filled with candy and a library on board full of wonderful books. But, as Kate and Tom communicate with their animal passengers, they learn that all is not well: some species are invaders, threatening others, while other animals are in danger of disappearing altogether, like the polar bear whose train car is melting away. In order to keep the Silver Arrow running, the human children in charge of it must learn how to care for its other inhabitants. This is a richly imagined ecological fable that stimulates the imagination and provokes the best kind of questions. What will some of yours be?

Children in grades K to 3 are invited to join us for this 4-week book club series with Tammy Malkin, long-time Rowayton Elementary School teacher and parent, to discuss The Silver Arrow. This first book in the popular fantasy novel series by Lev Grossman blends magic and adventure with a clever metaphor that gently introduces the realities of a global environmental crisis.

Copies of the book will be given to each participant to keep! Space is limited so please register here to reserve your spot today!

Women and Money Series: How to Make Sense of Today’s Financial Markets

When it comes to the financial and real estate markets, people aren’t always as rational as you would think. Behavioral finance experts have been studying the not-so-smart decisions people make. We will reveal the fears, misperceptions and emotional needs people have that sabotage their investment and home sale returns.

Join us for this monthly roundtable for women on money led by financial professionals Julia Strayer and Liz Maccarone. This series’ discussion will focus on how to make sense of today’s financial markets, is open to women with any level of financial knowledge, and is an ongoing informational gathering to learn and share.

We’ll show you how to avoid the mistakes and make decisions like the pros. We’ll cover the latest market news and how that might affect your decision making. We’ll also give you background and context for understanding why market movement occurs and we’ll share strategies for keeping ahead of what might come. Register here!
