Booktivity: A Pizza with Everything on It by Kyle Scheele

Children ages 2 to 6 and their caregivers are welcome to join us to celebrate National Pepperoni Pizza Day as we make our very own pretend pepperoni pizzas! While we’re crafting our pies using paint, glue, and paper, we’ll also listen to the story A Pizza With Everything On It by Kyle Scheele. In this whimsical picture book, a boy and his pizzeria-owning dad decide to make a very special pizza together with “everything on it”. But the boy really does mean everything! They start with ingredients like mushrooms and pepperoni and soon move onto toppings that are so outrageous and so silly they might destroy the universe itself. While crafting our own paper pizzas, we’ll let our imaginations run wild!

Booktivity: Turtle Island by Kevin Sherry

Did you know that turtles can grow to be very tiny or absolutely enormous? Can you imagine what would happen if a turtle grew big enough to become an island? That’s the story told in Turtle Island by Kevin Sherry, which we will read to inspire our own turtle creations! In the book, a giant turtle is lonely floating in the ocean all by himself, until a wonderful group of friends makes a home on the back of his shell! We’ll use a paper plate, glue, glitter, and squares of tissue paper in bright colors to craft our own “giant” turtles with a shell made out of a beautiful collage. Children ages 2 to 6 and their caregivers are welcome to join us for this book club/crafting session mash-up.

Children’s Book Club with Tammy Malkin

Wednesdays from September 6 through September 27

Children in grades 3 to 5 are invited to join us for this 4-week book club series with Tammy Malkin, long-time Rowayton Elementary School teacher and parent, to discuss A Kind of Paradise by Amy Rebecca Tan, a truly lovable story about the community that surrounds a local library.

Thirteen-year-old Jamie is dreading the community service she’s been assigned to as punishment for stealing a book from her school: volunteering at Foxfield Public Library over the summer. It’s going to be so boring, but at least she can hide out from everyone at school who knows about her terrible mistake, and from her crush, Trey. Little by little, though, the charm of the library steals over Jamie and she finds herself at home amongst the library staff and regulars, including “Black Hat Guy”, who comes in to sleep in a chair every day, and Wally, the film connoisseur. When a pending government funding cut threatens the library’s future, however, Jamie may have a new crisis to solve! A must-read for bookworms and library lovers.

Copies of the book will be given to each participant to keep! Space is limited so please register here to reserve your spot today!

The connections between different genres (blues, soul, folk, Motown) and the heroes who created them (Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Woody Guthrie, Aretha Franklin) help us understand who we are today. Cool Cats encourage lots of participation and we all get exercise by combining dancing and spelling!

Instrument demos help us understand the physics of sound. Cool Cats “builds the band” 1 instrument at a time. Playing a song is like writing a story, one that attendees will help create here by choosing an instrument to tell its own story via an improvised solo. Expressing our problems via the Blues helps us feel better, and sing-a-longs bring us all together.

Can their help keep Mrs. Frisby and her family safe? Join us as we find out!

Children’s Book Club with Tammy Malkin

Fridays from May 5 through May 26

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert O’Brien is a classic middle grade novel that brings its animal characters brilliantly to life. Mrs. Frisby is a recently widowed mouse who has made a hardscrabble but cozy existence for her family of four baby mice, Teresa, Martin, Cynthia, and Timothy. In the winter, they hunker down in a cinderblock buried in the farmer Mr. Fitzgibbon’s garden and, come spring, they move out to find new lodgings before the planting season puts them in danger. But, when her son Timothy gets pneumonia, Mrs. Frisby is faced with a serious problem: should she risk making Timothy worse by moving for spring or face almost certain death by staying in Mr. Fitzgibbon’s garden? Luckily for Mrs. Frisby, help comes in the form of the rats of NIMH, a highly intelligent band of rats who escaped from a laboratory and use their superpowers for good. Can their help keep Mrs. Frisby and her family safe? Join us as we find out!

Booktivity: The Skunk by Mac Barnett

Following Rowayton Elementary School’s One School, One Book celebration in April, Rowayton Library is excited to share our own 3-piece celebratory program series! In this program, children ages 2 to 6 and their caregivers are welcome to join us for a book club/crafting session mash-up.

While we craft our paper bag skunks, we’ll also read a silly story! The Skunk by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Patrick McDonnell, is a whimsical book about a man in a tuxedo who finds himself followed around by a skunk! He walks through the streets of town, goes to the opera, and visits the fairground, all while the skunk wanders close behind. What does the skunk want? Could he and the man become friends? We’ll find out as we make skunk pals of our own!

Animal Embassy Presents: Nighttime in the Animal Kingdom

Children in grades K through 5 are invited to join us as we welcome Animal Embassy to take us on a nighttime journey through the fascinating night life of the animal kingdom! We’ll learn about the differences between “nocturnal,” “crepuscular” and “diurnal” animals and discover what these amazing creatures do while we are tucked tightly in our beds dreaming at night! Many nocturnal critters have highly developed senses of hearing and smell, and specially adapted eyesight to help them navigate with the light of the moon and the stars. The most exciting part is that we’ll get to explore these night-time activities and adaptations with live Animal Ambassadors!

As this program is brought to us by an outside organization, we ask that every participant who wishes to attend (both adults and children) be registered individually so that we may ensure that we do not exceed the maximum capacity requested of us.
